9 months on... back in the Workhouse

So my last blog post was April 2020.  And I thought things were bad then. Things did get better, the kids were off school until September but then went back until Christmas.  Corona levels looked ok, then after our glorious leaders sent university students back to campuses throughout the country, funnily enough the case numbers started to rise.  So the government dithered and dallied while the case numbers went up, then put us into a lockdown lite in November but kept schools and universities open, because of course they have a force field around them that means coronavirus can’t penetrate the school/university grounds, and being a student confers instant immunity.   So the case numbers came down a bit and it looked like the whole “Boris saves Christmas” narrative might be on, but then the cases went up again.  And up and up and up.  Boris hadn’t saved Christmas at all.  Boris actually condemned lots of people to death by Christmas Dinner, by not tightening things up more than he did.  But he got Brexit done.  Twat.

And there is Covid 2.0 and 3.0.  Covid 2.0 spreads much faster than original Covid and has been running rampant in London since December.  Covid 3.0 came from South Africa but we don’t know huge amounts about it yet - we think the vaccines work against it <<crosses fingers>>.

So here we are in January.  On January 3rd Boris Johnson said schools were safe and told primary schools to open then next day as planned.  On January 4th Boris Johnson closed all schools and put us into lockdown.  Home school is back open - so the workhouse is back.   Yesterday 68053 people tested positive for Covid, and 1326 people sadly died.  My sister in law’s mum got taken into hospital with Covid yesterday, my hubby’s boss has tested positive and my friends dad and sister in law are in hospital with it.  It feels much closer this time than in the lockdown and is proper scary.

That said, people aren’t being as good complying with lockdown as they were before.  The government’s apparent “do as I say, not as I or my family do” policy has backfired magnificently and people have lost patience with it.  There are more and more conspiracy theory nut jobs out there, propagating all manner of excrement on social media.  We do have vaccines rolling out though which does give promise of there being an end in sight.

Home School 2.0 for my youngest (Year 6) is a lot better in that he has structured activities and his teacher is actually looking at things that he produces unlike last time where his previous teacher didn’t seem to give much of a shit if I’m honest.  They are using Google Classrooms now which really helps, rather than just uploading random material from websites for the kids to work through.  He’s getting on so much better with the structure, although it is harder for us working peeps as there are deadlines, and if he gets stuck we need to deal with it there and then, rather than in a couple of hours when our meeting/report writing is done.  My eldest is also getting more structure which also seems to be helping.

I’m now getting ready to go back to work after taking a longer than usual Christmas break - I’m not sure it has done much for getting me recharged, and I definitely need to work on my mental well-being, with insomnia and anxiety currently pulling me down in a big way.  I also want to come out of this lockdown physically and mentally fitter than when I went in - this is my challenge.

That’s all for today - just an update.  It feels a bit groundhog year at the moment, and I am definitely apprehensive about trying to run homeschool and working full time again - it was brutal last time, and I have got to manage things a bit better this time.

See you soon x
